Medieval Medical Practices…definitely not like today, thankfully

Medieval Medical Practices…definitely not like today, thankfully.

In time chivalrous times of long ago when kings and queens ruled the land and their court of lords and ladies where the epitome of elegance and class. They were times where knights would be the saviors and champions of the kingdoms as they led battle after battle and romantically swept the women away on their feet. An era when wizards, dragons and other monsters would attack or defend the castle as part of the struggles that were known as the dark ages. These romantic notions are conjured up based upon Hollywood and the legends and lore of so long ago. No matter the danger at hand or the battle to be fought one thing was clear; the medical practices at the time might have been their worst enemy.

We obviously know that out medical practices in this day an age of technology and scientific advances are much more reliable and successful than back then. The belief of how disease was spread and started could be considered laughable at best, because the last time I checked when I get a stomach pain it isn’t a small troll inside me trying to get out, I have been known to be wrong in the past however.

I, for some odd reason, started to thinking about these medical practices while I was at the hospital about to get surgery on my sinuses and figured what the heck; let’s see what I can find out. To my shock, horror and humor I have found the following.

Hemorrhoids: There was a 7th century monk who was actually the patron saint for hemorrhoid pain, that saint definitely got the wrong end of the deal on that one. Now get this one, he apparently developed hemorrhoids in his garden and sat on a stone which gave him the magical cure. The stone apparently exists to this day and can me visited by any sufferer looking to sit upon its magical surface for relief and cure. Of course if that did not work then you could always take the other approach which would be to use a red hot poker to burn them away.

Zodiac signs: Another practice was that depending on what astrological sign you were born under the doctor needed to be aware of certain things. If you were a Taurus the doctor should not make incisions in the neck and throat and avoid cutting any veins in this area. Now if you were a Virgo the doctor should avoid cutting open a wound in the belly and internal parts, looks like virgos didn’t last to long in life. Now being a Pisces I had to see what I was forbade from doing, and it looks like my doctor should not cut my feet, look like I make out in this deal of dos and don’ts of this surgical guideline.

Dwale: Dwale is a crude anesthetic used the same way that anesthetic is used today in the operating rooms by relaxing the individual to sleep and pain relief so as not to feel discomfort during surgery. Now that’s great if it weren’t for that fact that Dwale could kill you very easily. It was made up of a combination of lettuce juice, opium, vinegar and gall from a castrated boar, which doesn’t sound all that bad until you add the last ingredient which was hemlock juice. All you Wicca and Shakespeare followers will know hemlock juice from many plays and potions. Hemlock juice is some very serious stuff and attacks the nervous system and is a very affective poison, once symptoms start its usually over as it moves rather fast through the body.

Bloodletting: Bloodletting is the one cure that everyone has pretty much heard about so I won’t spend too much time on this one. It was the practice of cutting veins and letting the toxins within the body to flow out via the blood stream. This in practicality sounds like a viable solution if it were not for the fact that usually you bled to death. They would slice a vein open and let the blood flow, not everyone died, but it was a barbaric treatment to say the least. Now if they were trying to release the toxins after watching the movie Twilight I could completely understand that.

Trepanation: Now some people who know about or heard about this procedure sometimes confuse it with lobotomy. Keep in mind that this is not about removing sections of the front lobe of the brain, this is about drilling holes into your head/skull. This procedures of drilling or cutting a small square into your skull is believed to treat cranial disease or for mystical purposes, depending on what you want to believe. They felt that the evil spirits or demon trapped in the cranial area would be able to escape through the hole that was created, because demons and evil spirits are stupid and couldn’t possibly leave through the ear, nose or mouth…that would be just plain silly. Oh and if you thought this practice had long since gone the way of the Do-Do then you would be wrong, there are some people who still believe in this and some quack un-insured doctors willing to do it too.

Toothache: Some people have had toothaches and some have not, I have been fortunate enough to not have one, but I do know some people who have and they say it’s very painful. So here is a remedy I think should work for everyone that I found in my research plus it will save on dental bills. If you take a candle and burn it close to the tooth that is hurting then the worms, yes I said worms, that are gnawing at the tooth will fall out into a cup of water held close to the mouth and candle. See dentists are such con artists, they tell us we need to floss and brush everyday; how does that keep worms away? No wonder my dentists never told me about the candle trick, he would lose all his business, such a con.

Pimples: I’m not going to spend all that long on this one that I found, mainly because its so bizarre and inhumane, but I’ll touch base on it. A cure for pimples was to take two white puppies, had to be white, and before they could see, you would chop off their heads and then let it drain out by hanging them from their back paws. Once the blood was all out your would mix it with some white wine and then apply it to your face to reduce you pimples. Now 2 things come to my mind about this, first off I guess PETA didn’t exists back then and secondly I am beginning to wonder what Clearasil uses in their formula now.

Now there are a vast amount of other weird medical therapies used such as leeches & maggots, which by the way are actually used in modern hospitals today to help heal cuts and wounds, but for the majority the ancient practices are long gone away. One thing I found interesting was the fact that even though it was the dark ages, they did rely heavily on sterilization by washing wounds and washing and burning medical tools. The diagnosis’s might have been off and some of the remedies not so well planned out, but at least they knew that dirt was bad.

Be safe and remember that candles are better than brushing,
John Cannon

Late Night at the Horror Hotel now Investigating the Paranormal

Late Night at the Horror Hotel now Investigating the Paranormal

Late Night at the Horror Hotel is involved with a number of things both on and off the screen and we are pleased to announce a working relationship with the Ghost Investigating group The Midnight Watchmen based out of Eastern Pennsylvania.  (www.midnightwatchmen.com)

The Midnight Watchmen were formed over 3 years ago by a group of friends who all shared the same common interest in the paranormal and everything that goes bump in the night. In that short time they have grown to a generous size group of individuals who have many talents. From psychics to reiki masters to scientists and all that is in between they bring to the table a wealth of information.

As some may or may not know the co-host John Cannon has been involved with Paranormal Research, Cryptozoology, and Urban Mythology for quite a number of years both nationally and internationally. With this experience and background, he with Rob Dimension and Sal Valente have developed a 30 minute style show based upon these strange realities as it were and there will be a 5 minute segment on the regular TV show showcasing this as well. The show will be called Bizarre Realities.

Some may only see the humorous side of the cast of Late Night at the Horror Hotel, but one thing they are serious about are people’s beliefs. If you would like LNHH’s show Bizarre Realities to come out to your location for filming/investigating please send an e-mail to latenighthorrorhotel@hotmail.com

Lake House Hotel in Saylorsburg, PA: The horror isn’t just for Halloween

Lake House Hotel in Saylorsburg, PA: The horror isn’t just for Halloween

This coming Halloween season Rob Dimension, Pigamortis and myself will be helping to entertain the masses at The Hotel of Horror & Alternate Nightmares in the old Lake House Hotel located in Saylorsburg, PA.

Now when Rob, Sal and I first went up there to meet with the owners we had no idea what was in store for us. We figure it was you basic standard haunted attraction for the Halloween haunting season. How wrong I would be about this…how about dead wrong? You see in talking with the owners it turns out that the Lake House is in fact haunted and while we did not get into details of stories and experiences I did get the sense that they had some to share. I mentioned to them that I had been a paranormal investigator for well over 5 years now and was wondering if they would allow me to conduct an investigation. We talked a bit about the possibilities and then went on our ways as we figured out the logistics and involvement of our show with their attraction. Once it was all said and done we went about our ways and prepared to do some filming in September to prepare a special show based out of their attraction.

So rewind now back to September 9th as I was on my way to have a meeting with Rob and Sal I stopped at a Barnes & Nobel to pick up some books, as I am a big into reading; especially when it involves the strange and bizarre. Now as I walked into the PA Travel section and began to thumb through a book about ghosts of the Lehigh Valley, written by Kenneth Biddle, I did not expect to see what I saw next. I thumbed through and as if by a strange force the book opened up to page 61 the chapter entitled The Lake House Hotel. I was floored and began to read, and of course I had to purchase that book right then and there. I mean how could I not?

I read about how it was considered the “place to hang yourself” as close to 15 hangings had apparently taken place in the hotel. While most of these hangings are difficult to find and proves based upon lost records and carless organization at least 3 had been confirmed. These were people who lost it all and simply checked into the hotel, went to their room & then hung themselves. As odd and harsh as this might seem, I have done some background checking and this was not an uncommon act for a man to do if he had lost everything and in other words, nothing to live for.

One story is that of a bartender who was savagely beaten and he was not mentally or physically right again, now I tell you this story in particular as you shall see later on in this article. Another story is of a injured mine worker who worked at now long gone brick factory next to the hotel, he was injured so severely that he passed away on the front porch of the hotel. In fact in a lot of the stories I have found in books and online the front porch seems to possess the most likely area for paranormal activity as hangings, deadly beatings and injured people passed away there. Just keep in mind that just because it happened on the porch does not mean that the spirits can’t go into the house and “play” as it were.

Some of the paranormal activity that takes place within the Lake House is of usual “haunting” standard or as standard as haunting can be. Things can go missing that were just laid down or other small items like rocks or caps may be thrown across the room as the walls or people. In the book it talks of a chair that appeared out of nowhere when there wasn’t one there 2 minutes earlier and everyone had been accounted for. Now there are the two things in particular that sparked my interest the most, the first being a telephone that mysteriously rings. This may not sound mysterious if it weren’t for the fact that the wires are completely cut and it’s not plugged into anything. Why did this spark my attention, well when I showed the owners the book I had found and they began to thumb through it they both stopped at the telephone and excitedly said “Look! There’s the telephone!”. So I knew there was another story to be discussed in relation to the phone.

The second thing that sparked my attention was the appearance of shadowmen/figures, now remember the story of the bartender I told you about earlier. Look at the picture below. This photo was taken I the bar next to the front porch and you can see that in the red circle there is the figure of something resembling that of a person. Now let the speculations commence, but let me fill you in with the details first. I was the only person in the room and the other people were on other floors or in other hallways. The skeleton head on the bar I thought may be casting a shadow, but if you look based off of its own reflection in the mirror, it couldn’t have been that. Could it have been the shadow of the bar tender or that of a miner or a hanging victim, who knows, but all I can say is that it’s very interesting to say the least. I know some may say”Oh you’re quick to assume” not so in my case for this reason. I actually studied this photo for a week trying to figure it out and actually sent it to some of my closest paranormal research friends who did their best to debunk it to no avail.

I am excited to get the opportunity to investigate this location and as well I encourage everyone to come and visit. It is a slice of history where maybe the past just doesn’t want to let go fully. So remember this as you begin to walk through the haunted attractions of the Lake House Hotel; is what I am seeing part of the attraction or am I looking at the real deal? You never know.

Be safe and happy ghost hunting,
John Cannon

Late Night at the Horror Hotel reaches deal with Sickening Thud Films!!

Sickening Thud Productions takes over Late Night at the Horror Hotel

A few weeks ago, we were fortunate enough to be approached by Wedge Wegman and Shannon Hall, the Philadelphia film makers thoroughly enjoyed the show and a relationship was born.

As of Today, Sickening Thud Productions will be handling all production and directing of our TV show and commercial spots. This is a great chance for us to utilize their experience in helping the show evolve even more. The energy level of the Sickening Thud crew is fantastic and we could not be happier. Our next television episode shoot is scheduled for this coming Sunday. Looking for some innovative changes...... we can't wait.

Sickening Thud :

Sickening Thud began in 2008 with the award winning short "DAISY DERKINS: DOGSITTER OF THE DAMNED".  They've gone on to produce several deliciously comedic horror films, and have just finished their latest dark comedy, "EMBALMO!", which will premiere at the Project Twenty1 Film Festival on October 3, 2010.  Aside from the macabre, Sickening Thud will begin to dabble in the science fiction realm next year by introducing a superhero web series.  Our mantra: "GIVING THE PHILADELPHIA FILM SCENE A PUNK ROCK STYLE KICK IN THE BALLS!!"

Looks like business is about to pick up!!!!

The Crew gets "Examined" by Scott Ruth and the Examiner

Get to know the guys!

A few weeks ago we were approached to give some insight on Horror, our lives outside of this craziness and opinions on some classics. Scott Ruth, who is a writer for the Examiner, fielded some questions to the entire crew and we answered openly and honestly.

The guys talk about how the show started, how Horror differs from their lives in Pro Wrestling and what the remember and love about Horror! If you ever wanted to know more about Cannon, Dimension and Pigamortis, here is your chance.

To read the article - visit

or just read below - Credit Scott Ruth

Nearly every city across the nation (and many international locales) have their very own television horror hosts. But in Philly, we've always had the best. Back in the 80s we had Stella "The Maneater from Manayunk" and today we have Rob Dimension, aka Rob The Clerk, John Cannon aka Chef John, and Pigamortis Wrex, the zombie pig; the hosts of Late Night At The Horror Hotel!

On Late Night At The Horror Hotel, Rob The Clerk, Chef John, and Pigamortis Wrex  host some of the greatest films of classic horror cinema. You get great horror films, hilarious comedy skits, creature cooking and a zombie pig, I mean, what more could you ask for? Sex, violence, gore, torture, murder, mayhem. Oh. We're talking about Late Night At The Horror Hotel, not the city of Brotherly Love? Sorry. Ok, back to the show; "MURDER, MAYHEM, CREATURE COOKING AND MORE"; think of it as Elvia, Mistress of the Dark, meets The Three Stooges. Minus the huge boobs and the stooges. In reality, and all joking aside, what you have is a group of guys, with a great deal of love and respect for the horror genre, who host classic horror gems, incorporating their own brand of horror humor along the way.

Rob, John, Pigamortis and the crew are brilliant with both their choices of films to air, as well as with their comedy and hosting skills. It seems Philadelphia has the best of everything, from food, to sports teams and especially horror tv shows. Suck on that Los Angeles!! (Yikes! I hope that doesn't get me shot! I kid. I kid because I love. And I say that I'm kidding because I'm afraid of being shot!)

Once again, I consider myself to be very fortunate with the quality of folks from the horror community whom are wiling to allow me to interview them. This time around, I got to talk with Rob Dimension, John Cannon and Pigamortis Wrex, the hosts of "Late Night At The Horror Hotel".

Philadelphia Horror Examiner:  Thanks so much for taking time to answer a few questions gentlemen. Let's get right to it: Can you remember when your love for horror began?

  • Rob Dimension - "When I was a little guy, honestly, my Dad was the one that introduced me to Horror. His love for the genre really spilled over into my world, and I was a lucky kid. Late one night, I was about 10 yrs old, I had overheard my parents talking about John Carpenter’s Halloween film. My Mom wasn’t a horror fan but my Dad was trying to persuade her to watch, it was no easy task. I sat at the top of the stairs, watching and listening, and was scared to death of the Boogey Man after that night. While I was shocked, it was really a wake up call for me…so Michael Myers was the beginning of all this madness."

  • John Cannon - "My uncle and I used to stay up late watching horror film after horror film while ordering pizza and drinking coke. I had seen a number of horror movies before, but none of them made me ever “fall in love” with horror until I saw the 1990 movie Demon Wind. I don’t know why this was the movie that kicked it off for me and I have told this to a number of people and nobody seems to remember having ever seen it, but maybe it’s because they vomit what appears to be marshmallow fluff, who knows. To this day my uncle and I are the outcasts at the family functions as we sit in the kitchen watching and talking about different horror films."

  • Pigamortis Wrex - "This goes back to my first horror movie i ever saw. Back in the day before DVDs and even before VCRs there were these things called DRIVE-IN movies. Well my parents used to take us to drive in movies and we'd be asleep before the 1st movie started. This night was no different, except for the fact that I woke up at the start of the 2nd movie. (Yeah they used to do DOUBLE FEATURES, too) That 2nd movie was Dawn of the Dead. AND like any good lil creep, i stayed quiet and peeked over the back seat and watched that movie... Needless to say, sleep and I didn't get along for a month or so afterward. My dad in his infinite wisdom (and his growing tired of me refusing to turn the lights out) decided that in order to overcome my fear of all things scary he would do so by showing me more horror movies. Along with this he also showed me documentaries on how movies were made and books in the library on things like Special FX make up and a PBS special on Ray Harryhausen and how he created monsters and skeletons and such. So it was then that my fear became something i embraced and love to this day."

Philadelphia Horror Examiner - You guys are not only in the horror hosting biz, but you're also respected members of the pro wrestling community. (Well, I'm not too sure that Pigmortis wrestles but he looks like he could serve as the modern day Abdullah The Butcher. Sorry, maybe "butcher" is the best word to use around a pig. My bad.) Do you find ways to incorporate your love of horror into your wrestling gimmicks?

  • Rob Dimension - "For me, my Wrestling persona is the total opposite of my love for Horror and even, how I really am in my “real” world. Rob Dimension, the character in on the TV show is a silly, dim witted, probably well meaning victim of his own mistakes (probably more like me). While, in the crazy world of Pro Wrestling, I am a Preppy, you know the guy who you hated in school. It’s funny that the Preppy style is now making a comeback, should the fashion world be thanking me?"

  • John Cannon - "My whole entire wrestling gimmick and style is based off of my love of horror and the 80’s genre in particular. I paint my face like a skeleton, wear 80’s style horror t-shirts, wrap my arms in white tape and then proceed to pour blood all over myself. I put the blood on top of my head in a way that it looks like I have a head wound that is bleeding on the way to the ring. I have taken some time off of wrestling and when I return to the ring I will be doing a new gimmick of a zombie bleeding cowboy, sort of like the bad guy in the House films. I usually carry a bloody axe or a gimmicked chainsaw that shoot sparks to the ring as well, so definitely horror plays a role in my wrestling."

  • Pigamortis Wrex - "Wait... are you calling me fat? I'll have you know i am WAY too pretty to ever be mistaken for Abdullah the Butcher. You wanna see some butcherin done, you just throw another fat remark at me you sunuva..... ANYWAY, some of my best friends are in the wrasslin biz as well as doin the Horror Host gig. They are very similar and I know that more than a few wrestling gimmicks have snuck their way onto the small screen, and the thing is, its something you love and you try to find away to incorporate it in every facet of your life."

Philadelphia Horror Examiner - Horror or wrestling? Which is your first love?

  • Rob Dimension - "As much fun as Wrestling has provided me, Horror is my perfect fit. I have been lucky in both, but Pro Wrestling has taken a backseat to Horror, lately. I am not ready to walk away, but the time is coming soon."

  • John Cannon - "They are both equal to me as I get to be creative with both of them in different forms. If I had to pick one it would be horror as I get less injured filming then I do in the ring, note I said less."

  • Pigamortis Wrex - "Well I have always loved wrestling... I've gone to my first wrestling match around the same time I was introduced to horror, so photo finish, wrestling came first, but horror has remained steady and is more integrated in my life nowadays."

Philadelphia Horror Examiner - What's the story behind "Late Night at the Horror Hotel"? Can you tell me about how it came to exist and how you guys ended up as the hosts?

  • Rob Dimension - "Late Night at the Horror Hotel was a combination of ideas between John Cannon and me. I had an idea to start Horror Hosting show; he had an idea to start a show based around cooking, involving Horror. It was a great fit, we had a few meetings about how to combine the two and there you have it.
The actual story of the Horror Hotel was just a thought I had about how things would be if you were sent to Purgatory and were basically given a job. We are forced to work in dismal conditions, so of course there are going to be chaotic moments. You never know who will be the next guest."

  • John Cannon - "Wow, I’ll try to remember the whole series of events, but Rob is so much better at this one than I am. I had started Creature Cooking which is my take on if Alton Brown and Elvira had a love child cooking food that went with films and bizarre twists to them. Rob has always been big into horror, more so than myself I will freely admit and one day we started talking about some ideas. He knew all about horror hosting and other than a couple of them I had never understood what it was or entailed. He told about a ton of people and I looked them up and they had some good stuff and it looked like fun. Now keep in mind is wasn’t some out of the blue meeting, we had known one another through wrestling for at least 8 years before this. So it started up and then Pigamortis came into the picture and I am glad he did because it gives both Rob and I another way to interact plus the guy who plays Pigamortis is just as equally a nice and great guy as Rob is. I trust and respect them both highly and consider it a privilege to work with them both."

  • Pigamortis Wrex - "I lost ONE stinkin hand of cards... now I'm here on this show. I think Dimension cheated. "

Philadelphia Horror Examiner - Who are some of your favorite horror genre actors and actresses, past and present?

  • Rob Dimension - "Vincent Price, Donald Pleasance and Jamie Lee Curtis."

  • John Cannon - "Robert Englund, Kane Hodder, Max Schreck, Ben Chapman, Michael Gross, & Doug Bradley."

  • Pigamortis Wrex - "Kane Hodder, Lance Henrickson, Linnea Quigley, Dick Durrock, Robert Englund, Dick Warlock, Carel Struyken, Peter Jackson, Sid Haig."

Philadelphia Horror Examiner - Can you tell me some of your absolute favorite horror movies? Also, are there any that you find yourself watching again and again?

  • Rob Dimension - "I am a huge fan of John Carpenter’s Halloween and George A Romero’s Dawn of the Dead. Dawn of the Dead was one of the first films I bought myself on VHS. When you only have one film, at the time, I watched it a bunch. I watch Killer Klowns from Outer Space a lot, it’s so fun. Plus, not Horror but Sci-Fi related, I watch a lot of the older Japanese shows like Ultraman and Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robot. Plus, I watch at least 1 or 2 Godzilla films per week."

  • John Cannon - "I am a huge fan of Demon Wind, Hellraiser, Tremors & Critters and while I can watch them repeatedly I find myself watching the 1940-50’s style of films like Creature From the Black Lagoon (which is my all time favorite), It Came From Beneath The Sea, The Blob and The Deadly Mantis over and over again. I tend to gravitate towards those films because they were the foundations of what we have today. It was a time when people were actually scared and it didn’t take much, the imagination was so much more alive back then."

  • Pigamortis Wrex - " Ok, get comfortable. Dawn of the Dead (Original and Remake), Bad Taste, Dead Alive, NotLD (Original and Savini Remake) Maniac, All the Friday the13ths, Tremors (all), Blacula, Frankenhooker, Brain Damage, Humongous, Blackenstein, Godzilla vs. Destroyah, ANYTHING by William Castle, I am a horror/sci-fi junkie. I will watch pretty much anything in the Rubber monster/slasher/gore/exploitation/supernatural genre. GOD BLESS NETFLIX "WATCH NOW" feature."

Philadelphia Horror Examiner - If you could have any guest of your choosing appear on Late Night at the Horror Hotel, be it someone who is still active or someone who has left this earth, who would you, chose and why?

  • Rob Dimension - "Vincent Price, I look at him as the voice of Horror. To me, he is a true Horror Icon. The way he carried himself and his persona were fabulous. George A Romero would be my 2nd pick, he created a genre that exploded, being Zombies. Without him, we would never have the late night discussions on if we could survive a Zombie Apocalypse."

  • John Cannon - "I would so pick Robert Englund, one because he is an icon and legend of horror and two for a selfish reason is we wouldn’t have to do much work, his presence alone would be enough to fill the show."

  • Pigamortis Wrex - "Vincent Price. Not only would he class up the joint, i would love to pick his brain about the things he's done. PLUS, he was a great chef and could do some Creature Cooking with Cannon and hopefully he would just kick Dimension's ass."

Philadelphia Horror Examiner -  Best horror movie of all time? (This can differ from the favorite movies question, as it may be a movie that, although it may not be one that you consider a favorite, but you still see as being the greatest ever)

  • Rob Dimension - "I will stick with Carpenter’s Halloween, plain and simple. The story, the way the film built tension, the music….top notch stuff."

  • John Cannon - "Creature From The Black Lagoon."

  • Pigamortis Wrex - "Dawn of the Dead, it was creepy, gory, humorous, great soundtrack, had a "message" it was innovative, still holds up to this day."

Philadelphia Horror Examiner - Worst horror movie of all time?

  • Rob Dimension - "I have lived through the 80’s and have been a avid Horror film watcher for years…I have seen my fair share of stinkers. They know who they are.."

  • John Cannon - "Frankenhooker…can you count that as a bad horror film though, let alone a film in the first place?"

  • Pigamortis Wrex - "First of all Cannon, FRANKENHOOKER is FRIED GOLD! All your taste is in your mouth! Worst "Horror" movie of all time? Exorcist2. OH yeah and anything related to the "TWILIGHT SAGA""

Philadelphia Horror Examiner - How do you feel about horror films today, as compared to 20 or 30 years ago? Do you see the genre as progressing, as being stagnant or do you feel it's falling behind?

  • Rob Dimension - "I think the foreign market is still fresh and inventive. Films like Martyrs, REC and recently The Human Centipede have changed what is scary or considered Horror. I wish that Hollywood would take some chances on some Independent writers and directors; there is so crazy stuff out there in the Underground layers of Horror. Film making has changed, what worked in the 80’s would not be accepted by the masses today. It’s a PG-13 market; the teenagers are the main demographic. That’s why the VHS Horror fandom is booming. People miss the campy, gory (non cgi), crazed killer splaterfests."

  • John Cannon - "I am not a fan of the horror films of today, the big movie studios seem to be more into remakes and crap rather than looking at some of these independent companies out there and picking them up. Like I stated before, I like the pure time of years ago when imagination wasn’t tainted and it didn’t take a snuff style film to get people scared in a movie theater."

  • Pigamortis Wrex - "Well, 70% of the movies out now, blow. That's no surprise. HOWEVER I am a huge fan of Indy horror. Indy horror has what the big studios gave up on. The heart. Indies still TRY to entertain! Big Studios just care about monetary bottom line."

Philadelphia Horror Examiner - Now for a little "fluff" question just for kicks: If an extremely wealthy man came to you and told you he wanted to fund any film that you wanted to either star in, direct, produce, etc., giving you a chance to be a part of the production of your dreams, what would you chose?

  • Rob Dimension - "This is a tough one. I would probably say Write and Direct. I know that write wasn’t on the list, but I would love to become involved with the behind the scenes of film making. Sure, I love being a Ham in front of the camera but, the satisfaction of creating something that you believe in is the best feeling."

  • John Cannon - "It would be the actor/director…I know I picked two, but it’s the honest truth."

  • Pigamortis Wrex - "OOOooo Man. I'd pull a Peter Jackson and direct/act. If Cannon can pick two so can I."

Philadelphia Horror Examiner - One final question; what does the future hold for each of you, respectfully, as well as for Late Night at the Horror Hotel? Feel free to engage in some shameless self-promotion at this point, if you'd like.

  • Rob Dimension - "For me, I have been lucky to stumble into some film roles, plus I host The Horror Society LIVE radio show now. I hope to become a better master of the craft, be well rounded in all aspects. I love Horror and I hope that I will continue to be accepted.
For the Tv show, I really and truly hope that someone out there decides that we are filling a niche that is missing, gives us a bigger stage and lets us loose. We have a fantastic crew, we can only get better."

  • John Cannon - "The future for me is with my scuba training and to complete my Dive Master certification while going back to college for another degree in business/logistics, completing the 3 cookbooks I have started and some wrestling on the side. As for the future of Late Night at the Horror Hotel, who knows, I will keep an open mind and say we will be syndicated and doing it full time as a job, but the future is a lot like a magic eight ball, you shake it…turn it over…and look at your answer “future unclear check back later”. All I can definitely say is that as long as it’s fun; it will go on for a very long time."

  • Pigamortis Wrex - "Let me put on my swami hat and look at these tea leaves and gaze into my crystal ball... I don't know, I mean I'd love to say some wealthy, yet generous tv exec will see the show and be like "HEY FELLAS COME BE ON MY CHANNEL. HERE IS A BUTTLOAD OF CASH SO YOU GUYS CAN HAVE A BUDGET." That way we could do this full time, because that would be a dream come true and we can all do this for many years to come and retire as cult icons. BUT the reality side is, I didn't get in this for the money and will continue to keep doin what i'm doin and unless i win at cards and get Dimension to rip up that IOU, i will be at the Horror Hotel for a lonnng time. Stop by www.Latenighthorrorhotel.com and show me some love and/or pity... "

I would like to thank Rob Dimension, John Cannon and Pigamortis Wrex for your time guys. I truly appreciate it. You guys are all awesome, as is your show.

Rob Dimension Interviews Amy Lynn Best tonight on Horror Society LIVE at 9pm est

Make sure you are listening tonight as Co-Host Rob Dimension interviews Independent Film Maker and Actress, Amy Lynn Best.

Taken from Horror Society - This week host Rob Dimension interviews filmmaker and actress Amy Lynn Best. Amy Lynn Best is a trained dancer and actress who started in the business by co-producing the independent feature horror film, The Resurrection Game, and co-stars as the pop psychologist turned zombie exterminator, Sister Mary Bliss. Like many independent film producers, Amy learned the film business from the ground up. On the short haunted house film Tenants, for instance, Amy studied cinematographer from that film's director of photography, Bill Fuller. Out of necessity, she learned the basics of grip work, camera operation, and the fine art of line producing. In addition to acting in and producing The Resurrection Game, Amy served the film as art director, additional photographer and craft services. On one shooting date in particular, she fed the cast and crew two specially-made lasagnas, then denied herself her nourishment due to the fact that she still had to go before the camera in a skin-tight leather-and-spandex costume. Born in Topeka, Kansas but raised as a Pittsburgh native, Amy studied acting and dancing since she was three years old. She has acted or worked on many films and made her feature directorial debut on Happy Cloud Pictures' Severe Injuries. Most recently Happy Cloud Pictures' and Amy Lynn Best completed the indie horror film SPLATTER MOVIE. Amy Lynn Best is definitely one of the outstanding women filmmakers in the business.

You can listen right here at 9pm eastern standard time. -

Dr. Terror reviews our show and calls us "The Hee Haw of Horror"

Dr. Terror calls us "The Hee Haw of Horror"

In 1969, Hee Haw made an impact that changed the landscape of TV Land. The Variety/Humor show set the pace for what people enjoyed....why am I telling you about Hee Haw? Well, Dr. Terror, from Dr. Terror's Blog of Horror, recently reviewed our Tv show and likened us to the cult classic icon in Country Music TV...Hey, he could have said The Lawrence Welk Show.

Am I flattered? Of course...here are some other notables from the review:

"These guys are succeeding at resurrecting the comedy of Laurel & Hardy and/or Abbott & Costello only taking it to a very dark and magical place. Rob Dimension loves his physical comedy and is a master in the art of masochism (I've seen him blow himself up and cut his own hand off... that's dedication). Chef John will entice and dice your taste buds with some of the most interesting sounding meal preps I've ever heard (Armadillo eggs? yes please!). What you've got here is a combination of Mystery Science Theatre 3000 with Dinner and Movie and add some jokes straight out of the Munsters/Vampira/Zacherly playbook for garnish. It's like a variety show"

"There's a stake sandwich (yes, I spelled that correct) and an undying commitment to the love of schlock. Rob and John choreograph an entire military campaign against Gammera using army men and a toy replica and teach the audience how to cook something totally strange. This kind of entertainment is destined to jump off cable access and straight to AMC."

Thanks again to the good Doctor for watching and enjoying the show. To read his entire review, make sure you head over to DR. TeRRoR's BLoG oF HoRRoR and tell him we sent ya over!!!  Hahaha...Hee Haw...

Local Philadelphia Film Maker says - "Camp + Horror = WIN"

Late Night at the Horror Hotel makes a Sickening Thud
by Rob Dimension

A few months ago, through some mutual friends, I was "wised up" to a local Philadelphia film making crew that was making some waves amongst the Underground. With titles like:

"DAISY DERKINS, DOGSITTER OF THE DAMNED!"
"EVIL BREW"
"Battle Nun: Key To Heaven"
"THE HALF-LIFE HORROR FROM HELL or IRRADIATED SATAN ROCKS THE WORLD!"
"UNWINDING"
"EMBALMO!"

I had a feeling I was gonna like these guys. I hooked up with Wedge Wegman and her crew through emails and saw her last week at Monster Mania. She is a Punk Rocker, with a no nonsense attitude, plus she knows what vision she has in front of her and I think we were instant BFF's...okay maybe not...hahaha.

Their latest film, EMBALMO!, will be screened at the Project Twenty1 film festival during the weekend of October 1-3, 2010 and we are wishing them the BEST of luck. Okay, so enough of my babbling on...here is what she sent me today:

There is little else in the world that goes as well together as campy horror and sketch comedy, a fact that is proven once again by John Cannon, Rob Dimension, and Pigamortis on the Late Night Horror Hotel. Just after I was introduced to Dimension, he sent me two episodes of this mysterious show I'd never seen. With great trepidation, I put on an episode one night. And I was HOOKED! After greedily watching the second episode on the disk I found myself wanting more.

Dimension and Cannon play off each other quite well during the breaks in the films. Where some horror shows cut into the film at inappropriate times, these two seem to interject their dorky/ditzy humour at just the right moment. PLUS, they pull out the prop gags, something that I absolutely adore. (Cheese-STAKE, anyone??!? PRICELESS!)

The most impressive thing about the show? The hosts are down-to-earth, approachable guys who TRULY love this genre. This isn't about money or fame, folks. This is DIY fandom at it's best, and the Late Night Horror Hotel delivers a WIN!!

Guinness Book of World Records - Credible anymore??

Guinness Book of World Records….blowing bubbles with a tarantula is not world record worthy, that’s just plain ridiculous.

I remember being a little kid on Saturday afternoons watching old Kun-Fu movies, Godzilla Films and a Guinness Book of World Records television show. It was sort of like a Ripley’s Believe it or not type of event with people doing stunts/events/acts of feat that would make a normal person cringe and stand up to take notice. I remember watching the guy who pogo-sticked around the world or the girl with the extraordinarily long hair. I also remember sitting there thinking to myself that these people had such tenacity for sticking to what they set their goal to be no matter if it was to be the biggest, fastest, shortest, tallest, smartest or longest in the world, I mean after all it was a world record book not a small town record book.

Once I had discovered that this was more than a TV show and actually had a book published every year to update and accrue all new broken records, I made it a point to check out every one that I could from the library. As well I would bug my parents each and every year for the new published book as one of my Christmas presents.  Would get the small paperback edition every Christmas and I would begin to read each and every record on the bus ride to and from school and even during my lunch periods. I would read the book of records when I had completed my school work and errands, it meant that much to me. I didn’t read many comics when I was a kid, I read reference books, did I miss a youth of imagination; I would say no. I would look at the people in the record book as goal setters and dreamers and would strive to set and attain my own goals. I remember flipping through the book and reading about the fattest twins, the longest finger nails or the guy who stood in one place for the longest amount of time.

I had to know more about the book and I had to find out where and why it was created, I mean who would think of such a fantastic and entertaining idea of writing these records down? That man turned out to be Sir Hugh Beaver, who happened to be the managing director of the Guinness Breweries, hence the title for the book of records. He was trying to settle a dispute over which was the fastest game bird in Europe and he became less than thrilled with the lack of knowledge there was on such subjects, so he created his own reference book and the rest is history as they would say.

He wanted his book to be the reference book to end all reference books where you could find any and all information that you could ever possibly need to know and then some. People began to apply for record after record and only the most elite and legitimate of records would be accepted. Then in the new century the book of world records took a turn for the worse and became extremely petty and frivolous.

You began to have people breaking 30-50 world records in their life time when back in the day when people first applied for the record book it was a shock when one gentleman had 6 world records. Now you have people getting into the book for longest time ironing, longest time playing GTA, blowing the most bubbles with a tarantula in their mouth and the ever popular most successful salesman. Are these really achievements? Are these really feats that only these people can do takes great preparation and ability to succeed at? My answer is no, the world records book in my eyes has shilled itself out to the highest bidder and to not hurt anyone’s feelings in the aspect of being “pc”.

If you have a skill, ability and talent that no one else has then go for it set a record and see how long it stands until you or someone else can break it. If you don’t have a skill, ability or talent then it just makes it that much sweeter when you get or break that record because you had set that goal and succeeded in it, you didn’t just stand there 55 hours and 5 minutes ironing. The kicker in the whole ironing or any other extended event is that fact that they are allowed to take breaks for food, naps or bathroom usage. If I am allowed to take breaks like that then heck I have been working at my job non-stop since the day I started only taking breaks for sleep, vacation and sick days, that has to be a record of some sort. I guess the one good thing is they have stopped giving out records for drinking or anything that relates to healthy and safety. So it looks like the fattest motorcycle riding twins will never be broken anymore, oh darn it.

How sad it is that we have gotten to the point that we will accept any crap given to us as something great and spectacular, it’s kind of sad really when you think about it.

Be safe and try breaking the record for the nosiest exploding sledgehammer…I looked and it’s not in there…yet,
John Cannon

Another show review is in - Improv Instructor "Digs" the show

Dan Stabb is 1/2 of the Improv Comedy duo known as CUBED. CUBED is a workplace-comedy improv that relies heavily on audience suggestions and participation throughout the show. CUBED’s highly interactive performance allows the audience to write memos, provide their company’s name/service, and even become part of the show themselves.

Dan wanted to see what all the fuss was about, thinking we had met our match...we handed over a few episodes...a bit hesitant though. Unsure of our ability to "Win" Stabb over, we all waited patiently for a reply, to our surprise.....this is what Dan sent us:
"Finally got a chance to watch it -- I definitely dig it. The interplay between you and John is really fun. Besides, I'm always a sucker for a good laugh track. The humor really matches the campiness of the movies (and I totally mean that as a compliment). Really fun stuff, man."

So there you have it...another positive review. I guess my question is - What are you waiting for? Why aren't you ordering yet? Look to the right side of the page, see the store...click it and go buy!!!

Pigamortis is a "Fan of the Dead" Review

Fan of the Dead review
by: Pigamortis Wrex

So I sat down popped in this DVD waiting to see some sort of uptight, pretentious French documentary about some Frog's trip to Pittsburgh Comic Con and his Romero worship. Man was I wrong. Nicolas Garreau (our documentarian) really nailed a fans' perspective on this one because he is 100%, undying (undead?) Romero/Zombie fan!

This isn't some slick, avant garde, grand production from some french indie film company. Instead, its something that would invoke the fanboy spirit in even the most jaded of horror fans.
Nicolas takes us on his journey from France across the Atlantic to the exotic wilds of Pennsylvania. On this road trip he has a checklist of finding all of the locations from "Dawn/NotLD 91/Day and Creepshow". His first stop before hitting the Comic Con he takes us to the Margaret Morrison Carnagie Hall where they filmed Creepshow "The Crate" segment. Its when he finds the hallway used in the film that Nicolas absolutely shows his pure passion for Romero and his love of the films. He takes us to the studios used by Romero's Latent Image back when shooting the original NotLD. Its here that we learn the building's basement was used as the farmhouse's basement as well as the roof being used in Dawn during the SWAT assault.

We are then brought to Pittsburgh Comic Con for some camera time with the zombies at the 25th anniversary of the film "Dawn of the Dead" or as Nicolas knows it "ZOMBI". Its here that go along with Nicolas on the Monroeville Mall tour with Ken Foree, Peter Emge and "Machete Zombie" Leonard Lies. Just some quick trivia learned from this movie, The money used by Peter and Steven in the bank scene in Dawn? REAL*
(*according to Ken Foree) Throughout this tour Nicolas shows all the little nuances and memorable scenes in Dawn, and each and everytime he got somewhere I recognized, i smiled. Invoking memories and just made me a happy Pig.

After the mall tour, we are taken to the locations of Night of the Living Dead (Savini remake, one of ole Pigamortis' favs) as well as the missle site(now warehouse)The film showed him sitting in traffic when he got lost on his way to these sites but it added to the feeling of being along for the ride.

This dvd is more like someone's vacation footage. I mean this is a good way. No pretense, no "script". Just sheer passion for something that has driven him all this way. A religious journey of sorts. Pittsburgh is his Mecca and you can't help but share in his enthusiasm and zombie love. In my opinion, THIS should be shown on the Travel Channel, instead of boring shows about going to BANGKOK, Naples, Kuala Lumpor or places i have NO desire to go. It is this movie makes you want to find these places for yourself. (Those fans who already havent.) We are privy to seeing things through Nicolas' eyes with no filters or hype or pretense. Just thru the eyes of a fan. I was a bit disappointed when this ended, I found myself wanting more. Maybe I will go on a road trip myself and enjoy just being a fan again. This was entertaining pure and simple. All zombie/Romero fans need to pick this up!

Pigamortis gives his take on Monster Mania 15

 Pigamortis Talks Monster Mania 15
 by: Pigamortis Wrex

Well it was a great weekend. Got to meet lots of new people, picked up some great swag, and got the word out about the Late Night at the Horror Hotel show to a lot of people. Monster Mania 15 in Cherry Hill, NJ. I'm not one for being a fan boy or anything, but i gotta tell you just how much fun I had here. The people running the show were all very friendly and very accommodating to a couple of shmucks from a Horror Hotel.

I'm not going to review all the wonderful things that went on there because I am not even close to a good enough writer to convey all the awesome that is Monster Mania Con. In order to really experience them, you need to go there for yourself. That's a fact.

First on the list and top of the attractions is the "reunion" of the cast of the Boondock Saints. Norman Reedus, Sean Patrick Flanery, and David Della Rocco. Not that they are horror related (although Reedus kicked ass in Carpenter's "Cigarette Burns") Carpenter also was top of the guest list at the Con. I assume this movie falls into the "CULT" status and thus why its lumped in with a horror con. I could be wrong though. Regardless, these guys were very cool, and way down to earth. IN ANY EVENT... This kinda what bugs me about the CHILLER CON (Even though in my opinion Monster Mania wipes the floor with Chiller) its filled with autograph sessions with stars from not only the horror/sci-fi genre, but people like "Ferris Bueller's Mom" and Richard Kline "Larry, from Three's Company". Now i know these people deserve to make a living just like everyone else does, but what in the BLUE HELL do they have to do with a Horror convention???
NOT a DAMN thing.

My only disappointment with not only this con but almost all the cons I have been to of late, is the lack of Independent filmmakers. There was a time when you could go to a con and find a plethora of tables with guerrilla filmmakers who scrounged and saved up to get a table at a con and peddle their latest film. I was saddened not to see any tables like this at Monster Mania. I hope this isn't a growing trend. I know with the advent of Facebook, Twitter, and mobile media, guerrilla advertising is optimal and the ability to reach hundreds possibly thousands of people, for no virtually no cash, but I guess i'm just an old, salty bastard who misses the old days when Indy filmmakers got their movies to cons for the masses who looked forward to seeing them.

Late Night gets some love from Kristy Jett

Late Night gets some Love from Kristy Jett

Some mornings it's so nice to wake up and have someone recognize what your doing as a Positive. Today, I woke up to Kristy Jett's post about the Tv show and the crew behind it. I am truly flattered that someone like her took a few minutes to give us a shout out.

For those who don't know Kristy (can't believe anyone out there doesn't know about her) she is one of the most kind and nicest people you will ever meet, seriously. She is the editor for The Blood Sprayer, she is a contributing writer for numerous sites like Fangoria, Dread Central, Ax Wound Magazine and works for the coolest Horror based T shirt company - Fright Rags. She is all over the net and has a passion for horror and is truly talented.

She had a few things to say about our show - Speaking of Dimension, "Not only was he as friendly online as he was in person, but he also had a gang of equally awesome cohorts flanking him. This included his beautiful wife, and his two adorable kids. Not to mention the sexified John Cannon and the terrifyingly awesome sexpot known as Pigamortis Wrex."

"She continued with "The latter two help to run the Latenight Horror Hotel with Dimension. The Latenight Horror Hotel is a Horror host show that runs on public access in Philadelphia. However you can get episodes on dvd! And you should! I laughed more than 20 times in the one episode I watched."

We just wanted to say, Thank you for recognizing our hard work Kristy, you are Fantastic! To read her entire Blog - Visit here

My Take on Monster Mania - August 2010 in Cherry Hill, NJ

My Take on Monster Mania 15!!!
by: Rob Dimension

Monster Mania and I have had a relationship for years now, I have been a vendor for approx 6 cons and this was my first time being a Guest! I absolutely LOVE Monster Mania, the promoter Dave Hagan, the way the convention is, the people, the guests...everything..it's like my home turf, if you will.

Friday Morning - I packed up the car, headed out to meet up with my Partners in Crime for the weekend, John and Pigamortis, to get set up and ready for the Friday afternoon kick off. We were set up in the Terrace Room, right along side the Pet Semetary reunion and Felissa Rose from Sleepaway Camp. Talk about being in heaven, they were ALL tremendous, seriously.

As the lines of people increased, it was our mission to create a buzz about our TV Show, mission accomplished, at least I think. We talked to many, many guests...sold a great deal of merchandise and made a few friends along the way.

Showing off my magic skills kept some of the lines moving, plus being able to host several events throughout the weekend like the VIP Party, the Yorkshire auction and the Sinister Film Festival were all great experiences. It just made for a very fun weekend.

Just wanted to briefly touch on some highlights:
  • Just being there - seriously...it meant a lot to me
  • The Celebrity Guests could not have been any nicer
  • Smooth - the con was run very smooth from what I saw
  • For all the people who stopped by our table - THANK YOU!!

Here is a mini-video we put together - if you weren't there...you missed a Helluva Con!!
